Environment / Natural environment:
THE CHARENTE VALLEY

The river Charente, called by a certain king of France “the fairest stream of the Realm” winds through the Department from East to West, meandering languorously through the Northern reaches, giving the fisherman or the rambler a wide choice of places to stay and pursue his leisure.

RIVER TOURISM AND CRUISES

Navigable from Angoulême to Rochefort, the river Charente offers to all lovers of river cruising 147 Km of waterways to be appreciated with the family or friends, without the need for a boating license.
Twenty locks control the flow of the Charente. They are easily negotiated and will fascinate young and old alike.
For a trip back through time, the barging village of Saint Simon offers a voyage of discovery and a cruise on a typical sailing barge as used in the past.
