PRESENTATION
  Cognac is produced in the AOC region that is defined by the decree of 1st May 1909. The area spreads into the Department of the Charente Maritime, the Charente and a small are of the Deux-Sèvres and the Dordogne.
The vineyards cover 80 000 hectares of which 75 000 hectares are white grapes for Cognac production. The Charente and its 5,365 properties alone represent 50% of the production of these vineyards and of white wine that has the right to be called Cognac. The essential parts of production and commercial activities are concentrated within the region.

In Charente the Cognac business employs around 17,000 people out of a total of 22,000 in the limits of the region, as follows :
10 500 people in vine growing
3 000 in distillation and sales
3 400 in associated professions (glass, packaging, transport…)

Cognac sales and Cognac based products, were 145 million bottles in 2002.
Cognac is exported around the World (93,3%) and contributes 1.26 billion Euros to the trade surplus of France, and 70% of the Poitou-Charentes Region's surplus.
