Cognac is produced in the AOC region that is defined by the decree of 1st May 1909. The area spreads into the Department of the Charente Maritime, the Charente and a small are of the Deux-Sèvres and the Dordogne.
The vineyards cover 80 000 hectares of which 75 000 hectares are white grapes for Cognac production. The Charente and its 5,365 properties alone represent 50% of the production of these vineyards and of white wine that has the right to be called Cognac. The essential parts of production and commercial activities are concentrated within the region. |
In Charente the Cognac business employs around 17,000 people out of a total of 22,000 in the limits of the region, as follows :

400 in associated professions (glass, packaging, transport…)

Cognac sales and Cognac based products, were 145 million bottles in 2002.
Cognac is exported around the World (93,3%) and contributes 1.26 billion Euros to the trade surplus of France, and 70% of the Poitou-Charentes Region's surplus.
