The
extraction of clay and the manufacture of tiles and
bricks began in around 1850. While clay work has altered
little, the technologies for product design and production
have changed considerably, and companies have had to
adapt their production tools. The two firms based at
Roumazières-Loubert, Terreal (TBF) and Lafarge
Couverture, are among the most modern in Europe.

With
Saint Gobain Emballage situated in the west of the department,
these 3 companies account for more than 50% of all employment
in this sector of business.
