Training,
research and experimental production in the image domain
are an integral part of the work carried out by the
CNBDI, for the
benefit of students, researchers and professionals.
The CSTM (Multimedia
Technical Support Centre), specialised in new image
technologies, is a top-of-the-range installation
that offers a large choice of technological tools and
means available to all the users of Magelis,
the Angoulême Image Centre; composed of
six people, the services it offers include:
powerful
means of calculation permitting the creation
of images and real-time animation;
means
of storage allowing the archiving of productions
on the one hand, and access to data banks on the other.

The
CSTM has a Cyberdome, an installation which is
unique throughout the world, developed by the company
XD-Productions, and which enables the employment of
real-time 3D animation methods through optical movement
capture.
This new approach gives 2D and 3D animation systems
the possibility of precisely, efficiently and quickly
capturing the movements of real actors.

The
CSTM is also a centre for experimental project development
and for the transfer of technologies in the various multimedia
domains.
It works in partnership with
European laboratories and companies in the MELIES programme
(Modelling Equipment for Live Interactive Electronic Streaming),
with XD-Production as principal coordinator.
Project supported within the scope of the European IST
programme.

Research
action is led within a
regional partnership regrouping the laboratories of the
Universities of Poitiers and La Rochelle, the CNRS, the
ENSMA, and the CNBDI, such as the ALICE (Animation et
Lumière par Ingénierie et Création
Électronique - Animation and Light control through
Electronic Engineering and Creation) and CUSTODIEV (creation
of a European virtual laboratory) programmes.
