As the birthplace of the French paper industry in the19th century, the Charente also became home to felt factories, which set up near Angoulême, since felt was an essential factor in paper production. Later, the textile and clothing industry saw great development, and especially the production of the famous "Charentaise" slippers. Since it is exposed to new market conditions, this sector of business will now have to adapt and restructure its activity in order to increase.
